SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, Asia’s largest satellite communications operator and Japan’s leading multichannel pay-TV broadcaster, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with VIAVI Solutions Inc. and Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) to power its new “Universal NTN Innovation Lab” (NTN Lab). This state-of-the-art testing facility, located at the Yokohama Satellite Control Center (YSCC), is set to revolutionize satellite communications by enabling reliable, universal connectivity anytime, anywhere.
The NTN Lab, launched in November 2024, provides an advanced environment for testing Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies, combining Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO), non-GEO satellites, and High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS). Its mission: to validate the cutting-edge “Universal NTN” concept, which dynamically routes communication through the most optimal path to ensure seamless connectivity.
Advanced Testbed Solutions for Future-Ready Connectivity
To support SKY Perfect JSAT’s vision, VIAVI and Rohde & Schwarz have delivered a cutting-edge joint testbed capable of validating a wide array of NTN use cases. The testbed is equipped to support Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and GEO satellites, enabling end-to-end connectivity assessments, quality of service measurements, and application performance testing under real-world conditions.
Key features of the testbed include:
- VIAVI TM500-AS2: A streamlined base station testing solution that fully supports the 3GPP protocol, including Doppler and delay pre-compensation.
- R&S CMX500: A mobile communication network tester offering channel emulation and fading in one device, including all 3GPP fading profiles.
- VIAVI TeraVM RDA Engine: An advanced tool enabling realistic traffic scenarios to evaluate system performance under various conditions.
The lab’s initial testing phase will focus on GEO satellites operating in the Ku-band, a critical frequency range for high-capacity, wide-bandwidth communications. It will emphasize 5G NTN technologies, paving the way for the development of innovative communication systems based on satellite technology.
Driving 5G NTN Innovation
“We are proud to launch Japan’s first geostationary satellite-based 5G NTN demonstration,” said Hiroyuki Yagihashi, Deputy Group President of the Business Innovation Group at SKY Perfect JSAT. “This collaboration with VIAVI Solutions and Rohde & Schwarz demonstrates our commitment to advancing NTN technology and developing groundbreaking use cases. We are excited to accelerate the commercialization of the NTN business through this partnership.”
Jonus Chen, Regional Vice President of North Asia at VIAVI, echoed this enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to support SKY Perfect JSAT’s ambitions as Asia’s largest satellite operator. Partnering with Rohde & Schwarz on this testbed showcases our dedication to enabling robust and reliable testing solutions for satellite and HAPS networks.”
Alexander Pabst, Vice President of Wireless Communications at Rohde & Schwarz, added, “It is an honor to collaborate with SKY Perfect JSAT and VIAVI on this innovative project. By testing Ku-band and 5G NTN technologies defined in 3GPP Release 19, we are setting new benchmarks in satellite communication technology. This project underscores our commitment to providing cutting-edge, reliable solutions for seamless global connectivity.”
A Leap Forward in Global Connectivity
The “Universal NTN Innovation Lab” marks a significant milestone in the evolution of satellite communications, combining cutting-edge technology with a vision for ubiquitous, reliable connectivity. Through collaborations with technology leaders like VIAVI and Rohde & Schwarz, SKY Perfect JSAT is shaping the future of NTN networks and driving innovation in satellite-enabled 5G communications.
By leveraging advanced testbed solutions, the NTN Lab stands as a testament to the possibilities of seamless communication across geographies—bringing the world closer to a future where connectivity truly knows no boundaries.
